Re: (TFT) Americans and history, Duh!

We may all joke about it but here is a TRUE story of what happened in my classroom last year when I asked a simple historical question to get the day rolling (note: high school level students, ages 15-18)

From time to time I like to quiz my students on history. Last year on
December 7th I asked what the historical significance of that day was. One girl in the back of the room exclaimed " I know, I know: its' Arbor day!" Confused I said: "Arbor day isn't until the Spring." By then another student had solved the dilema by answering: "December 7th is when the Japanese attacked Hawaii." This caused the first student to give the defensive reply of: "Yeah, and they sank all the ships in the arbor!"

Who says we're hysterically illiterate?

I've read the Red Book of Westmarch. I know our history!

FRODO LIVES!!!

[Stan, I was very entertained by your history.]

Yeah! We didn't fight all those guys in the war of 1912 for
nothing! I mean, if it weren't for Franklin Roosevelt and the
Toughriders charging down San Juan hill at those limeys, we'd
be speaking Gaelic today! And what about Captain John Paul
Jones? Before he became pope, he was a famous captain in our
navy--sunk some British battleship called the Derriere. As he
said when asked to surrender the Batogne, his famous frigate:
"Nuts! I've barely begun the fight, and now the trick is to
make the other poor dumb bastard die for his country!"
