David,
Does this mean that a wizard can take drain strength from the willing fighters on his own team without wounding them.

Yes. We've played it that way many times with great success, especially in a mass combat style game. Gives the wizard lots of little mini ST batteries all around him. However, since your willing fighters have to be next to you for the spell to work it puts the wizard dangerously close to the combat, or it takes away at least one round of combat from your fighters as they stand around waiting to be drained, a round they could be engaging into combat to protect your wizard.

Meanwhile the goblin hoards are still charging, and trust me, their not waiting around for nuthin.....

From a role playing perspective you can always throw in this bit of spin: Due to the fact that wizards train to harness the magical forces around them they can give or drain (magical) ST from each other easily (that's why the Aid spell works so well for example). To drain ST from a non wizard however is a painful experience. This tends to limit the "willingness" of non wizards. (Might be the reason the rules mention that it's best to tie them up! ;^)

Finally, letting the wizard mark off two Normal ST hits as internal wounds to gain one point of Magical ST is a desperate gamble on the wizards part indeed. One ripe with role playing opportunities.
