I will definitely take a look at it.  This sounds similar to the system I use, where I determine a metal weight by type of setting (crown, ring, etc.) and a type of metal.  This gives the value of
the metal in the piece.  The values of the gems are added to that,
then the whole is multiplied by a 'craftsmanship rating' to get the final value.  This is handy because when the delicate crown gets
smashed by an axe, you just remove the craftsmanship factor to 
know its new value.

I also had aluminum in my table, fantastically rare since it
can't be produced, only found in mnoren ruins.  A slightly
different take on it from your view, I know.
