Re: (TFT) How often should TFT swords Break

You hit it pretty much on the head!

Keep in mind, though, that TFT covers a wide range of technological levels
from Stone Age to Renaissance. Also, its what the GM wants - he can decree
that his world has vast deposits of excellent quality iron ore, allowing for
very good weapons across the board (why anyone would do this I cannot
fathom, but it is certainly legitimate).

Historically, iron (and, consequently, steel) quality depended not only on
the skill of the smelter and smith working on it, but also on the nature of
the raw ore. Some regions were blessed with good quality ore, others were
stuck with iron bearing sands or bog iron. Of course, a lack of scientific
understanding of metallurgy hampered Mediaeval weapons and armour to an
extent, but not as much as may be thought - after all, the weapons did
work...

I tend to follow more the model of normal weapons being "cheap" - not
necessarily as in poor quality, per se, but just made of so-so metal with
so-so heat treating.
