My Etan campaign uses the three basic stats, but it allows splits to them via 
negative-point (disadvantage) talents. 

For example, a small-but-wiry character might have St 15 and 4 levels of 
Limited St (giving him an extra 4 points for talents). The character would have 15 
hit & fatigue points, but would have only St 11 for purposes of encumbrance 
and weapon usage. 

This allows both better-matching-to-conception via "split" attribute scores, 
and more talent-points for characters as well.
