Any of you use the tiles from Milton Bradley's Heroscape.
Back in November of last year I quickly mentioned Heroscape to this list. Here's the post: "Has anyone checked out Milton Bradley's "HeroScape"? It's a 3D hex based game complete with painted figures that reminds me just a little bit of a certain game that most of us on this list enjoy greatly. I've been toying with three dimensional Melee game boards (hills, ravines, trees, etc.) for years now and it's interesting to see how they handled it."
I've been meaning to write about Heroscape again for a while now. Basically I've been waiting for a system of modular tiles like this to play Melee on since 1977! I have tried hand making my own tiles with some success in the past but creating them just became way too time consuming. Thank you Milton Bradley for making these! I just ran a very large mass combat scenario (35 figures divided between 6 players) at a sci-fi convention this weekend here on Long Island using Heroscape tiles and believe me they positively add so much more to this game. Toys'R'Us just ran a buy one get one free special a few weeks ago and because I like the tiles so much I bought 14 sets!
Out of the box they aren't so bad but since I've always been a fan of the way Warhammer "looks" I spent a little time and flocked a set of my tiles with grass, dirt and rock. Personally I think it looks really impressive especially when you add in some model rocks and trees. Too bad I can't post pictures to this list. I thought their miniatures however were a little clunky looking especially if you are used to some of the other miniature figures that are on the market (plus they are slightly larger than 28mm). If you don't have time to paint figures however they would do fine. (If you know anyone who would like to buy a lot of figures let me know. I'm probably going to wind up selling most of mine on e-bay someday.)
Once I get past a couple of deadlines and get my taxes done this week I am going to try to post some comments and house rules about using them. Bringing Melee into the 3rd dimension creates some complicated problems concerning rules about who can hit, whose engaged to who, force retreats, line of sight, etc. I've spent the last four months working these problems out and I think I've solved most of the problems without being overly complicated. I'll try to post my house rules in the next few weeks as well as putting up some pictures up on my web site.
