Oops - I didn't answer these.   On long car trips, we would play TFT using 
a diceroller in my PDA since it would usually be too dark to use dice.  The 
reference materials would be my scrawled notes on NPC details and 
situations, usually written down by streetlamp (and while we pushed the car 
uphill through the snow.... OK that part is a little exagerated).  Last 
time I had to put together a game at a friends house, new characters took 
only a half hour or so (explaing game and races, etc, pretty much from 
scratch) and the setting was "make it up as you go".  There is no way I 
could do that with any other game.
