(TFT) Mixing the encounters
I like to mix it up within a single encounter, as I find it makes things a
whole lot harder for the party to use "standard tactics". My guess is that
you all already know this, but here goes. Here is the prototypical example I
stumbled on some years ago:
Confronted by a pair of giants, the PCs split up, get the pole w. guys around
the back side and then mob them to death. Confronted by twenty goblins, the
party forms up into a turtle (a tight group) to avoid being mobbed: every
player defends his quadrant and kills the goblins roughly one on one while the
missilers take out the archers.
But mix it up into one giant and ten goblins, and the party had problems. If
they form a defensive group, the giant comes and walks all over them, squishing
any who fall and forcing the wimpy archers and wizards out of the pocket.
OTOH, if the PCs split up to circle the giant, they in turn get mobbed by
goblins that get around behind them and once again can get into the pocket to
the missilers.
The PCs get wildly mixed groups, why not the NPCs? I wonder what the
strongest mix anyone could come up with is, for a given value of monsters?
