I disagree. There's very little 'whittling' in real combat as described in
period manuals, unless you count cutting at the hands and wrists. One gets to a
position to strike, and ends the fight. Even their idea of wrestling involves
breaking limbs and joints. Mostly, it seems to be a matter of getting to a
position where you can strike, and your opponent can't.

Also, a rapier doesn't really do less damage than a larger weapon. It's just a
different weapon, used differently. As one lecturer said,"There's really no
good place to run a piece of metal through the human body".

Usually, the single weapon guy loses when he does because the other guy can
press their shield or second weapon into that single weapon, which leaves them
a hand free to strike. And the single weapon guy wins if he can use range to
keep the other guy off him.
