Of course that speed is for relatively modern, trained soldiers.
The Romans considered 15 miles on the road a day's journey as evidenced
by their inns every 15 miles along the Roman roads in Britain.
Off road, should be less. 5 miles for hard riding of a horse used for
fast messaging.
Reading about Roman Roads in Britain is an amazing source of ancient
travel information.
