Okay the point of this one is to use the "Eye Altitude" function on Google Earth to pull my maps. We start at 3958.94miles to view the planet minus the poles. I'm looking for the Eye Altitudes I'd have to be at such that useing a standardised hexgrid I get measures of 20m, 40m, 12.5km (sts) and etc. I've got a pretty good idea of how this should work but the problem is actually trickier than it'd seem at first blush so I'll wait till I've worked the math on this one.
So far I have noticed that a 6ft tall person who looks straight down at thier toes with thier chin on thier chest and then looks as far forwards as they can without raising thier chin from thier chests can see about 250 to 300 cm in front of themselves. This is about 2 hexes.

Oh and the above figures were done for purposes of map description. Having never lived even VAGULY close to mountains I was struck by how visable the things were. I mean even the small ones can be seen for quite a distance. Were that I was traveling via foot and there are mountains in the area I'd have to get into the woods or a canyon or some such to get lost. Tall trees are a smaller version of this. Of course every situation is diffrent but in general players are gonna see the woods a day before they get to them...

300ft is in the ballpark for many conifers, etc.

"20 miles a day on beans and hay" is an old calvery saying. I find that this is a reasonable expecation of travel distance for a day especally for a group of people.

There's more of this but first there's more to say about hexes and this is drifting into a more general discussion of scale. So.....
