Re: (TFT) Building
Post and Beam wood construction (timber framing) with hand tools.
Hammers; Standard 10oz, Ripping 20oz
Hand Saws; Standard crosscut 8 points per inch, Docking 3 1/2 points per inch, One-man used for felling trees
Chisels; up to 19" for Socket-firmer.
Planes; can also use a Draw Knife
Boring Tools; Brace w/Bits, Auger
Measuring Tools; most measures will be body relative but a Framing Square is necessary, T Bevel for angeled cuts, String level or Pulmb Bob
Also helpful would be a Pry Bar, Breaker Bar, Post Hole Digger, Shovel.....
It seems the village Smith is gonna be a BUSY man.
4 principal joints are used in timber framing. These will vary with the situation.
A tounge and fork with a central tenon is used to to lock ajoining sill plates to the corner post.
A mortise and tenon is used for setting posts into the sill.
A shoulder mortise and tenon is used to fasten the girts. The shoulder joint caries the weight of the girt here.
A chase mortise and tenon is used for corner braces.
Roofs traditionally come 2 ways
Common Rafter uses 4 x 6 or larger rafters set 3 to 6 feet apart with the sheathing laid perpendicular over the rafters
Principal Rafter-and-Purlins uses 6 x 6 or bigger spaced 6 to 9 feet apart with 4 x 4 purlins running between them. The roof sheathing is then laid parallel to the rafters over the purlins.
Stuff on Masonry later...
