RE: (TFT) Variants = flavor of the age
Ah! In that case, I quite agree, though the giants and reptile men would want some appropriate explanations.
In fact, that's more like how I've designed most game worlds since I stopped setting new games in Cidri. One of the first world/cosmology/evolutionary-histories that a couple of us old TFT players designed a couple years after starting using GURPS had races based on something similar - they were all originally humans, some with non-human racial profiles (with very ancient historical explanations from artificial eugenic-y designs), and then cultural and professional profiles layered on.
Also, IIRC, at least one (independently produced) computer game that had different attribute levels (and I think talents and equipment) from culture but everyone was essentially human (I'm thinking of Runesword, now open source - see http://www.runesword.com/rs2.html).

Peter,
Ah, yes I see. I intended the example to be more along these lines. The
Race of Men produced ``Reginald``, and the Race of Lizard Men produced
``Srrga``. By using this substitution to take race out of the game it would
be phrased differently. A Crafting based economy produced ``Reginald``, and a
Tranport based economy produced ``Srrga.`` Any form of cultural Identity
could be used though. Not necessarily an economic one.
