There's a decent quickie tutorial here:

Each of the ZIP files I make have a gamebox (.gbx), scenario (.gsn)
and a game (.gam) file in them.

The .gam files should be ready to open and play (so in the tutorial,
you don't need to create a new game in step 2, just open the existing
.gam file).  As counters are placed and moves take place, move files
(.gmv) are created and are mailed back and forth between the players.
The moves can then be played (and replayed) using the controls.

I'd be happy to do a walkthrough with you some time using VNC or 
something so that you can get the hang of it.
