Actually, it a nutshell, it went like this ...

Instead of making a 4D6 roll vs IQ (or whatever), and totalling
them all up and having to check a special table, you'd simply
roll 4D6, take the highest 3 and add those up, using that for the
skill roll.

Worked on the other side too, instead of making a 2D6 roll, you'd make a 4D6 roll but this time you'd take the LOWEST
three as your skill roll.

This has the effect of 'skewing' the bell curve towards the high
or low end.  The positive effect being that a roll of 3 was always
very good, a roll of 18 was always very bad - but the odds of
getting a roll out there at the ends of the curve would change depending upon how many dice are rolled.

The idea was eventually discarded since the percentage change
going from 3 dice to 4 dice was seen as being too great.  I tried
a couple of times to save the system but it never really gained any traction.
