One of the best things you can do astronomically is to get a pair of
binoculars on a summer evening and look into the heart of Sagittarius.

There's a Larry Niven short story about the star pilot Beowulf
Schaffer attempting to get to the center of the galaxy.  I'll have to 
dig that up again and re-read it.
