SCA Duke here. I never fight with a shield unless forced to, or I'm
teaching. I don't feel they're all that huge, at least in SCA.
One thing to remember is that shields died out as armour improved. This
kinda fits with TFT, where the relatively unarmoured need more, but the
plate guys don't.
