Re: Steve Jackson - major change to TFT.

Hi Marc, everyone.
In AW it does say that wizard power spells with fatigue
ST (fST) not damage.  But yes, if a wizard is near passing
out from fatigue, then relatively small damage could make
him helpless, and dead if the enemy are not taking
prisoners.  (Or there are slimes about.)

But apart from the changes to experience, Steve Jackson’s
new rules have a huge impact on character development.
Players can buy endless talents and spells.  Player can buy
a very limited number of attributes, (excepting wishes of
course).

The mechanics of combat are staying pretty close to what
is there now, but how characters evolve and grow is now
totally different.

I would hope that a change this large would get a LOT of
testing, but SJG is looking to have the Kickstarter going in a
few weeks.  I fear that the new game will be poorer than it
should be.

I have very little problem with the new experience rules, it
is the new character development rules which make me
nervous.

In a theoretical sense.  I am very likely to continue using
my current rules, so if the new TFT sucks, it has no impact
to my campaign.  I just hope that the new TFT does well in
the current game market, because… well because I am fond
enough of TFT to hope it succeeds.

  Warm regards, Rick.

The only one that seems to change how the game plays (instead of between game character modification) is the staff rule which suggests that the wizard won't be in a position where they cast a bunch of spells and then get killed when a cat swipes them across the ankle.

Personally, I jettison all XP rules from all games and use my own (except for Chaosium's BRP variants), as changing them has zero effect on gameplay, but I can see how people who enjoy TFT's experience rules would not like the change.

One thing I didn’t like was SJ explicitly said, “Heroes can develop in the later game buy buying magic items”.  Grrr… I want my characters to be great because they are awesome, and not because they are carrying a tonne of stuff around with them.

Yeah, that's why we invented a whole magic item breakdown system.
