RE: (TFT) TFT: Bowyer, Slings, Handicaps, & Crazy Egor's
Well, not more brains than Armourer ...
Having hand forged and tempered swords in my time, I can assure you that
beating a lump of carburised lump of iron into a thin swordblade, heat
treating to be hard enough to take an edge yet flexible enough to not easily
shatter, cannot be considered a trivial feat.
The same can be said for body armour, as well.
However, you are right that Bowyer should be a little higher in the IQ
department; I'd make it equivalent of Armourer. The complexity is similar,
now that I think about it. I've not tried to make a long bow yet, but I have
got the Bowyer's Bibles series of books that covers the subject
exhaustively. I've only skimmed them, not having time for a reconstruction
as yet. But, yes, you do have to know what you're doing. I think I tried to
abstract that somewhat with the skill checks to make a fine bow, but that
may have turned out as well as the attempt with Flintknapping.
Not sure about the story about the Japanese Bowyers, though. From what I
recall, their bows were made out of bamboo segments, rather than wood as
such. Ditto for the arrows. If I remember, I'll check a few references out
of my library.
