Yeah, it always seemed like it was derived from the schoolyard
roll-and-tumble style of unarmed combat.

I dont much mind that. HTH damage is so little that giving an extra attack
doesn't seem to harm anything and makes sense from the standpoint that
using your natural weapons are faster to ready.
