I had been playing AD&D for about two years as well as a few other wargames, you know things like Star Fleet Battles and a few Avolon Hill games. Then I was at my favorite store, King's Hobby Shop on N. Lamar in Austin, and there was these "new" Microgames by Metagaming.

Pretty much ditto.
King's Hobby Shop, astoundingly, is still there (as of last week)! I drove by it and barely resisted the urge to go in and look around.

We dueled at lunch
everyday and even started going to school early to play.

We got to the point where a whole (solo, arena) game was about 30 seconds. Character design, around 8 seconds; more or less 6 seconds a turn for 3 turns after that; 4 seconds of jubilation/dejection. Repeat. But the multi-player battles where tactics mattered were even better.

Kirk and I have played in the past (and he's a very good referee!) We should try to get together more central-Texas games, assuming you are still in the area.
