Re: (TFT) Re: (TFT) Shield Wall - Defence bonus or armor?

I think the key point is that a shieldwall is not something used for small groups. The historical ones would be packed pretty tightly, including possibly a front rank kneeling, a second and a third rank higher up. The Roman testudo is a good example of the same effect.

All one would need to do is knock the shield aside as it is a passive defense. It can't be solid like a wall b/c then you can't stab out of it. So it is nothing more than using shields to overlap each other and if not moving to also cover the lower leg level.

there are some examples on youtube from the TV series Vikings, and it was used when Achilles hits the beach in "Troy".

For TFT, I'd say that the benefit is only realized if everyone has a spear and large shield, if they aren't moving, and it'd be a -1 to hit or a +1 to armor depending on how you look at it. Perhaps both. It should also be a -1 penalty to attack out of, and nothing but a stabbing weapon will work.

We haven't decided how big the shield wall effect is, I'm sure we can do
something about scaling problems.

I think the most important question is: what is needed to penetrated a
shield wall? Should a weapon that does lots of damage do the trick? Should
a high DX do it? I'm not sure I like either of those answers. Should the
wall be invulnerable until it is disrupted somehow using shield push
actions or a special talent for just that purpose? That sounds more like
the rugby scrum philosophy I've heard for historical battles. I suspect
this needs thought.

This is why I suggest reducing the hit chance rather than increasing the

damage reduction may not give what you want.

Either way, you run up against scaling problems.

Triple shields make someone practically invulnerable.

Enough DX adjustments do the same, though there's a practical minimum of
DX5.
