I think I see it happen maybe about once every couple years. More
commonly, I see people 'get it' in the middle of something, but then
overuse what they 'got' to the point where everything else goes out the
window. Yes, the scenario you describe is more common.

I've also played with a finer grading of skill than written TFT allows
for, but it's never turned out to be worth it.

One of the few major variations from TFT that has worked well for me is
allowing Fencing to be bought with any of the basic weapon Talents, not
just swords. It's just a very high level of skill with a weapon.

It's always interesting discussing rules variants.
