Re: Why not close down the Brainiac TFT forum?

Personally  I LOVE miniatures, but I quite frankly lack the space to store them, the equipment to paint them properly, the funds for miniatures or paints, and most of all, the TIME to do all the prep work for them.  Sometimes we use unpainted miniatures, but that has such a "Mattel" feel to it, that it actually interrupts "suspension of disbelief" and pulls us out of the games.  The closest I've been able to come, given all the constraints listed above, is the old cardboard heroes stuff from SJGs, (and, I'll note in passing, the Dungeon Fantasy boxed set has some beautiful (and very high quality) cardboard heroes in the box), which works well on the paper maps.

I've downloaded a few hexagonal maps printed as outdoor areas from some of the old TFT ring sites, and they are beautiful, so they work; plus I have the old Cavern and Dungeon tiles sets from the Cardboard Heroes line for the indoor floor spaces.  Finally, the early GURPS adventure Orcslayer had a very nice map of a small keep that I use for things like Wizards' towers and the like.  I recently picked up Castle Walls and the Castle Keep from the old Cardboard Heroes line , but haven't had a chance to use them yet.

At the end of the day, I'd LOVE to do something like what David does with his terrain and figures, but space, $$, and time are my major constraints.  I certainly do admire his work though -- and envy him the set-ups.  Also, I loved the Bridge at Khazad Dum scenario -- I've used that one as an introductory scenario to teach TFT ever since I ran across it -- it's been very successful in that role, especially since the Lord of the Rings movies came out!  Everyone seems to know the situation and the characters and they can get right into it.  ;-)

Hi David,

I have used miniatures usually whatever I can get.  I will not paint them but if some has painted ones to sell or if you are willing to paint hit me up.  As to terrain I have seen your site, love the stuff you have however I don't have the ability to make that stuff.  I have used SJG outdoor paper hexes in the past, now I have a green mat and a few plastic trees for outdoor combat.  I have Dungeon Tiles by Task Force Games (I think) and cardboard Heroes Castle the Keep by SJG for indoor scenes then we switch either to a blank mat or hexes for combat.

As to this topic I know that it was discussed on the forum back in the day Village on the cheep and so premade castle and dungeons were mentioned I can't remember the companies.

I am happy to speak to any topic.

Heartily agree with Ed here!

However, IMHO, the one downside of this list has always been the fact that it’s only purpose for the past 20 years or so seems to be to discuss rules tweaks and add-ons. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, it just seems to be very limiting. There’s a bigger, creative world of TFT out there than tweaking rues and playing using cardboard counters and un-imaginative paper hex sheets.

For example, how many of you use miniatures in your games? Which ones? Does anyone use any type of creative terrain in their games? Where did you get that terrain? Have you ever built a hex based dungeon? These are things that, due to the limitation of this list, sadly never get discussed. Or is it simply a "show me" thing vs a "tell me” thing that stands in the way of this type of discussion?

So, am I alone in this regard? Or does this list, by the nature of the way it’s set up, discourage the creative gamer that may be lurking here along with me?

Sigh, or perhaps I am the odd man out here and actually joining or migrating to SJ forums would be a better fit for me.

David

Joe,

Please don't shut down!! This list provides a space for things that will never make the official TFT: Neil Raito's Metals, The City of Clipportage, Various characters and beasties (that are from other systems) and any number of Rick Smith's rules.

I may not use all the optional rules listed on this site but I do enjoy reading about them, and discussing them even if they will never make TFT officially.  Also I have played almost every adventure posted to the site most of these would never have seen the light of day.  You helped keep TFT alive!

Even when TFT was alive and kicking, house rules and home brews were being made, so Steve reacquiring the rights to TFT doesn't invalidate this site.  Now I may be wrong on this, but I doubt that Legends of the Ancient Worlds from Dark City Games would not be around if not for this website or at the very least you provided a ready market for their adventures.  Mr. Dew can comment more on this than I can and I in no way mean to insult or lessen the great work that Dark City Games does.

Now rules like the you posted 20 years ago about pulling a character out of HTH which I modified, should be posted to SJG as I think it adds to the game without breaking the rules or adding complexity  (In fact I did post that rule to Steve's website giving you credit for the original idea of course).

Thanks,

I'll admit that I considered it after SJG re-acquired TFT and started the
forums, but I chose not to because 1) it takes virtually none of my time
or bandwidth to run and B) I still like mailing lists as opposed to forums.

The list isn't going to disappear any time soon.
