Re: (TFT) stuff put out by "The Game Design Group."
It seems likely that Howard Thompson divided the game design functions and
the game production functions for asset protection reasons. That way, if
Metagaming (which actually printed and distributed the games) went bankrupt,
GDG would stay intact. Metagaming probably ran up all of the bills and this
strategy would have protected the intellectual property of Metagaming if it
ever went bankrupt.
It didn't work out this way because (probably) Howard had to personally
guarantee the debts of Metagaming. If Metagaming folded, Howard would be
liable. Among his assets would have been the stock of GDG. Thus, creditors
would still be able to get the intellectual property. That's possibly the
reason Howard simply vanished...
