Re: (TFT) Disengaging - Revision in Melee - Not a free attack.
I've been fencing for forty years, and disengaging can be a very dangerous time if your opponent knows what s/he's doing or is faster than you (e.g., higher DX). On the other hand, if I'm the faster opponent, then I can probably get away fairly unscathed. Though it also depends on what the person disengaging is actually doing to get out of close quarters -- jumping back into an en garde position is one thing, trying to significantly run away is a completely different proposition. Given the game format and the desire to maintain simplicity, I think the Melee rules are just fine. If someone wants more complexity/accuracy, GURPS is a fine system, I hear.

Hi Gem,
I think you are hung up on the phrase "free attack", which you have been using.
It is not a free attack, the opponent uses his action to do it. Additionally it is an
attack at a DX penalty, so far from being free, it is an attack at a (potentially)
significant penalty. Think of it as a, "likely wasted attack".
