Chemical odorants, just like for natural gas (what was the school in Texas? reguardless, 'I smell rotten eggs') would be needed as well as illuminats for the flame (? plasma arc? same difference?) for "pure" hydrogen.
It's all weirdness, but the earlier a culture can "burn" sea-water as a fuel... =====
